**New Delhi:** Renowned Indian fashion designer Rohit Bal passed away on Friday at the age of 63 after a prolonged illness. Bal, known for his intricate designs and contributions to the Indian fashion industry, had been battling heart problems for the past year. He was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram in November 2023 for intensive medical care.
Bal had returned to work earlier this year and presented his final show at the Lakmé India Fashion Week in Delhi. Concerns about his health arose after he appeared unsteady on the ramp during the show.
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) expressed deep sorrow over Bal’s demise. “We mourn the passing of the legendary designer Rohit Bal. He was a founding member of FDCI and his unique designs gave Indian fashion a new identity. His love for art and innovation will always inspire us. Rest in peace, Gudda,” the FDCI wrote in a condolence message.
Bal’s last rites will be performed at the Lodhi Road crematorium in Delhi on Saturday evening at 5 pm.
Fashionabc.org estimated Bal’s net worth to be between $1 million and $5 million. His designs have been featured on reality game show “Kaun Banega Crorepati”. Besides clothing, Bal also made a mark in the luxury jewelry design segment.
After graduating with honors in history from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, Bal joined his brother Rajiv Bal’s family export business. He launched his independent business in 1990, which currently operates successfully in India, the Middle East, and Europe.
Bal presented his fashion shows in cities like New York, Singapore, Paris, London, Jakarta, Moscow, Sao Paulo, Munich, Colombo, and Geneva. His style has had a visible impact on the fashion industry.
Bal received numerous awards for his outstanding work, including the Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Award in 2001 and the “Designer of the Year” award at the Indian Fashion Awards in 2006. His contributions to the Indian fashion industry will be remembered for generations to come.
