**Dhanwar, Jharkhand, November 2, 2024:** The upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections are witnessing a bitter internal struggle within the INDIA bloc, as its allies clash in the crucial Dhanwar constituency.
The incumbent Chief Minister, Babulal Marandi of the BJP, is facing off against two candidates from the INDIA coalition: Rajkumar Yadav of the CPI(ML) and Nizammuddin Ansari of the JMM. This situation exemplifies the deep-seated problems plaguing the INDIA alliance in the state, including a lack of coordination, last-minute seat-sharing negotiations, and now, public disputes among its members.
The CPI(ML) initially withdrew its candidate from the Jamua seat in a bid to encourage the JMM to do the same in Dhanwar, but their efforts failed, leaving both parties with competing candidates.
Yadav, the CPI(ML) candidate, dismisses Ansari as a BJP “B-team” and emphasizes the direct contest between him and Marandi. He highlights the CPI(ML)’s strong record in Dhanwar, having secured more votes than Ansari in past elections.
Both the CPI(ML) and JMM are targeting the significant Muslim voter base in the constituency, with Yadav having a slight edge due to the sizable Yadav population in Dhanwar.
The INDIA bloc’s seat-sharing arrangement has been further challenged by the Congress, RJD, and CPI(ML) fielding additional candidates beyond their allotted quota, with the Palamu district witnessing a clash between the Congress and RJD in two key seats.
Congress leaders have accused JMM of failing to negotiate effectively and adequately compensate allies for their concessions, leading to a breakdown in trust.
While the INDIA bloc aims to retain power in Jharkhand, the internal conflict in Dhanwar and other constituencies raises concerns about the alliance’s ability to present a united front against the BJP in the upcoming election.
