**Mumbai:** New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel scripted history on Day 3 of the third Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium, becoming the highest wicket-taker at the venue in Test cricket. Patel, who was born in Mumbai but represents New Zealand, claimed his fourth wicket of the match to surpass the record previously held by England’s legendary all-rounder, Ian Botham.
Patel, who took a record 10-wicket haul in an innings against India at the same venue in 2021, now has 23 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium. Botham had 22 wickets at the ground.
“I was very happy to be able to come back to this ground and create some special memories,” said Patel after achieving the milestone. “It’s always great to play in front of a big crowd and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from the Indian fans.”
The 34-year-old left-arm spinner has been a consistent performer for New Zealand, having taken 83 wickets in 21 Tests. His recent performance in the ongoing series has been particularly impressive, with a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the Mumbai Test.
India, meanwhile, were left with a challenging target of 174 runs to chase in their second innings. They were struggling at 92/6 at lunch, needing 82 runs to win.
