**Dhenkanal, Odisha:** A tragic incident occurred early Saturday morning in Dhenkanal district when a goods train struck and killed an elephant near the Meramundali railway station. The elephant was part of a herd of approximately 40 jumbos attempting to cross the tracks in the Chinta Pokhari area, around three kilometers from the station.

The accident occurred around 2 am, disrupting train services until the elephant carcass could be removed from the tracks.

According to forest officials, an alert had been issued to railway authorities regarding elephant movements from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, yet the train driver allegedly ignored the warning.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by railway authorities. The elephant carcass has been sent for a post-mortem examination. The forest department has also launched its own probe into the incident.
