Sun Nov 03 11:28:13 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh Minority Alliance Demands Action After August Uprising

**DHAKA, BANGLADESH -** A coalition of 40 minority organizations in Bangladesh, known as Songkhaloghu Okkoyamurcha, has condemned the violence and discrimination faced by Hindus and other minority communities since the August 5 uprising that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The group held rallies across the country, with over 20,000 people gathering in Dhaka, demanding the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus address their concerns.

The alliance has presented an eight-point demand list, calling for legislation to protect minorities, the creation of a National Minority Commission and Ministry, and expedited transfer of land to minority owners. They also urge the government to ensure minority representation in government and parliament, enact anti-discrimination laws, and properly implement existing agreements concerning the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The group further demands the declaration of three days for Durga Puja, one day for Prabarana Purnima, and one day for Easter Sunday as public holidays.

In addition to these demands, the alliance has proposed six points for the reconstruction of a non-discriminatory state and society, including removing discriminatory practices in state functions and parliamentary sessions.

The alliance’s protests come amidst growing international concern about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh. Former US President Donald Trump has condemned the violence against minorities, criticizing the Biden administration for its perceived inaction on the issue.

The minority alliance has announced a flag procession on November 30 and a dawn-to-dusk mass protest, vowing to continue their movement until their demands are met.
