Devender Singh Rana, a prominent Jammu politician known for his efforts to amplify the region’s voice, passed away on Thursday night at a hospital in Faridabad. The 59-year-old Nagrota MLA was a vocal advocate for Jammu’s rights and was instrumental in pushing for a “Jammu Declaration” to counter what he perceived as attempts to divide the region along religious and geographical lines.
Rana, the younger brother of Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, had a long career in politics. He started as a general secretary of the Jammu Consumer Council in 1989 and joined the National Conference (NC) in 2000, serving as media advisor to former party chief Omar Abdullah. He was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 2014 from the Nagrota constituency.
In 2021, Rana resigned from the NC and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing his commitment to advocating for Jammu’s interests. He became a strong voice against the perceived marginalization of the region, particularly after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. He initiated the process of drafting the Jammu Declaration, aimed at creating a unified political narrative for the region and counteracting forces he believed were seeking to divide it.
Rana’s death has been met with grief and tributes from across the political spectrum. He will be remembered as a passionate advocate for the people of Jammu and a tireless champion for their rights.
