Sat Nov 02 14:38:33 UTC 2024: ## Shiv Sena (UBT) Leader Apologizes for “Imported Maal” Remark Against Female Candidate

**Mumbai, November 2:** Arvind Sawant, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), has issued an apology for his controversial “imported maal” remark directed at Shaina N C, a Shiv Sena candidate for the Mumbadevi constituency. Sawant claims his statement was misinterpreted and that he never intended to insult a woman.

The controversy erupted on November 1 after Sawant accused Shaina N C of being a long-time BJP member who only recently switched to the Shiv Sena. He then used the phrase “Imported ‘maal’ doesn’t work here; only original ‘maal’ does,” leading to accusations of sexism and misogyny.

Shaina N C filed an FIR against Sawant at the Nagpada police station on Friday, alleging that his remarks outraged her modesty. The Election Commission and Women’s Commission have also taken cognizance of the matter.

In his apology, Sawant stated that he was being deliberately targeted and that his words were taken out of context. He expressed regret if his statement hurt anyone’s feelings.

“I am being deliberately targeted by giving a different meaning to my words. I am sad about this, but still, if my statement has hurt anyone’s feelings, then I express regret. The respect of women in the country cannot be seen according to the party,” Sawant said.

The incident has escalated the political climate in Maharashtra, where Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20. The vote counting will take place on November 23.
