Sat Nov 02 01:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Diwali Fireworks Ignored Ban, Delhi Suffers Record Pollution and Health Impacts

**New Delhi:** Despite a ban on firecrackers, Diwali celebrations in Delhi saw widespread flouting of the rules, leading to record levels of air pollution and significant health consequences for residents.

A survey conducted by LocalCircles, based on over 21,000 responses from Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, reveals a stark reality. A staggering 69% of families reported at least one member suffering from health issues due to the pollution.

The most common symptoms reported were sore throat or cough (69%), burning sensation in the eyes (62%), and running nose or congestion (46%). Other reported health concerns included breathing difficulties or asthma (31%), headaches (31%), anxiety or difficulty concentrating (23%), and difficulty sleeping (15%).

The Air Quality Index (AQI) on Diwali night reached 999, the highest recordable level, in several parts of Delhi and NCR. This alarming figure highlights the severity of the pollution and its direct impact on public health.

The survey also highlights a significant increase in health issues compared to a similar survey conducted two weeks prior. The percentage of people experiencing sore throat and cough rose from 36% to 69%.

While 23% of respondents plan to utilize air purifiers, a similar number will simply endure the pollution, and 15% plan to continue their routine while wearing masks and/or boosting their immunity through diet.

This concerning situation underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of pollution control measures and the importance of collective action to combat the harmful effects of air pollution.
