**Kannur, Kerala:** Kerala is facing a severe Hepatitis A outbreak, with 6123 confirmed cases and 61 deaths reported this year. The highly contagious disease, spread through contaminated water and poor hygiene, has raised serious concerns about public health. Authorities have confirmed 17,067 suspected cases and 17 deaths.
The outbreak has been particularly severe in Kannur district, with over 800 cases recorded. The highest number of cases are concentrated in the areas of Thaliparamba, Chapparapadavu, Pariyaram, Maloor, and Thripangottur.
**Thaliparamba: Hotspot of the outbreak**
Thaliparamba has emerged as the epicenter of the outbreak, with a majority of cases reported amongst individuals between 15 and 40 years of age. Health officials believe that a recent family function may have contributed to the rapid spread of the disease. The outbreak has also spread to surrounding panchayats, with a total of 340 cases reported and 50 individuals hospitalized.
**Lack of hygiene a major contributor**
The lack of proper hygiene practices among those infected is a major concern. Health officials are highlighting the importance of handwashing after using the toilet and maintaining cleanliness as crucial factors in preventing the spread of the disease.
**Collaborative action**
A multi-sectoral approach is being implemented to address the outbreak. The District Medical Officer (DMO), Dr. Piyush M. Namboodirippad, has announced a comprehensive plan, “Thelichham” (The Education and Lifestyle Change for Hepatitis-A Management) in collaboration with the Thaliparamba Municipality, other local governing bodies, and the Food Safety Department. The initiative aims to educate the public about the disease, promote hygiene, and encourage lifestyle changes.
**Focus on water sources and investigations**
The DMO has ordered an investigation into the quality of drinking water in the affected areas. Water samples will be collected and sent to the Virology Institute in Pune for testing. The Health Department is also conducting investigations into the rapid progression of the disease and high fatality rates.
The current outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining proper hygiene practices and the need for prompt action to address public health emergencies. The Kerala government is urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with health officials to contain the spread of Hepatitis A.
