Fri Nov 01 17:00:49 UTC 2024: ## Shiv Sena Leader Faces Backlash for “Imported Maal” Remark Against Female Colleague
**Mumbai, November 1, 2024:** A heated political controversy erupted in Maharashtra today after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant made a derogatory remark against Shaina NC, a former BJP leader who recently joined the Shiv Sena. Sawant, speaking to the media, referred to Shaina NC as “imported maal,” sparking outrage and a formal complaint against him.
The comment, which translates to “imported goods,” was made while Sawant was criticizing Shaina NC’s recent shift from the BJP to the Shiv Sena. He claimed that “imported material does not work here. Only original ‘maal‘ works here,” implying that Shaina NC, who spent most of her political career in the BJP, was not a true Shiv Sena member.
Shaina NC, who is contesting the upcoming assembly elections from Mumbadevi, responded swiftly to the remark, calling it a reflection of Sawant’s “sexist” mindset. “Does he think every woman of Mumbadevi is a maal?” she questioned, adding that she would file a police complaint against Sawant for his derogatory language.
True to her word, Shaina NC registered a formal complaint against Sawant at the Nagpada police station. She accused him of “outraging the modesty of a woman” and demanded action against him for his offensive statement.
The incident has ignited a political firestorm, with several leaders condemning Sawant’s remark. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, while calling the remark “unfortunate,” asserted that Sawant would be held accountable for his actions.
Shiv Sena leader Milind Deora also condemned the remark, describing it as “outright disgusting” and highlighting Sawant’s history of making offensive statements. NCP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar joined the chorus of condemnation, stating that derogatory remarks against women have “no place in our society.”
Sawant, however, defended himself, arguing that his statement was taken out of context and that he had always respected women. He accused Shaina NC of trying to “set a narrative” by escalating the situation.
The controversy surrounding Sawant’s remark is likely to intensify in the coming days as the Maharashtra Assembly elections draw closer. The incident highlights a growing trend of political rhetoric turning increasingly aggressive and disrespectful, particularly towards women in politics.
