Fri Nov 01 17:00:56 UTC 2024: ## Karnataka Deputy CM Clarifies Stance on ‘Shakti’ Scheme, Denies Rollback Plans
**Bangalore, India** – Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Friday clarified his stance on the ‘Shakti’ scheme, a popular program providing free bus travel for women in the state. Following a reprimand from Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge for comments suggesting a possible review of the scheme, Shivakumar insisted his words were misinterpreted.
“There was no question of discontinuing the scheme,” Shivakumar stated, emphasizing his commitment to the scheme and accusing the BJP of politicizing the issue. He said he had merely suggested a discussion, not a rollback, about the scheme’s implementation.
Shivakumar also asserted his transparency in his role as Deputy CM, dismissing any claims of political interference. He attributed BJP leader Basanagouda Patil Yatnal’s recent letter to Prime Minister Modi to political maneuvering, stating, “I don’t wish to comment on those who need medical attention. He should prioritize his own well-being first.”
The clarification comes after Kharge’s strong statement affirming the Congress government’s unwavering commitment to the ‘Shakti’ scheme. He highlighted the scheme as one of five key Congress guarantees, emphasizing the party’s dedication to empowering women, protecting farmers’ rights, and safeguarding religious and public spaces.
Shivakumar’s initial comments stemmed from reports of some women expressing a preference for paying bus fares. However, no official move has been made by the government to alter the policy. The ‘Shakti’ scheme remains a crucial element of the Congress government’s agenda, aimed at promoting women’s empowerment and social mobility in Karnataka.
