**Shillong, October 31st:** Meghalaya observed National Unity Day today, commemorating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of independent India, who played a crucial role in uniting the princely states into the Indian Union.

**Governor Emphasizes Unity and Integration:** Governor CH Vijayashankar, presiding over a special ceremony at Raj Bhavan, paid tribute to Patel, calling him the “Iron Man of India.” He stressed the importance of unity, integrity, and the sovereignty of the nation, highlighting the enduring legacy of Patel’s vision for a united India. Governor Vijayashankar also underscored the significance of the “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” initiative, launched by the central government, aimed at fostering unity through cultural and linguistic integration across India’s diverse states.

**Unity Walks and Events:** Celebrations were held across Meghalaya, including a “Unity Walk” organized by the Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) CRCSRE-Shillong. The event saw the participation of over 55 individuals, including visually impaired beneficiaries, students, teachers, and staff.

East Jaintia Hills hosted a road race as part of the celebrations, attracting over 105 participants. NEEPCO Shillong organized a “Run for Unity” event, where participants pledged their commitment to national unity.

**Cultural Performances and Pledge Administration:** Cultural performances symbolizing national unity and integration were held throughout the day, showcasing the vibrant traditions of different states. Civil servants at the Main Secretariat were administered the National Unity Day pledge by Chief Secretary Donald P Wahlang.
