Fri Nov 01 12:00:46 UTC 2024: ## England Crushed in Caribbean Tour Opener as West Indies Secure Dominant Victory

**Antigua:** A new-look England side suffered a crushing eight-wicket defeat in the first ODI of their Caribbean tour against the West Indies in Antigua. A poor batting display proved fatal for England, who were bowled out for 209 after losing their final six wickets for a paltry 44 runs.

England’s new captain, Liam Livingstone, lost the toss and was forced to field first in overcast conditions. The West Indies openers, Evin Lewis and Brandon King, took full advantage, with Lewis smashing eight sixes in a match-winning knock of 94 runs.

England’s bowling attack, which included four debutants, struggled to contain the West Indies batsmen. Debutant John Turner and Jofra Archer looked threatening with the new ball but were unable to build pressure.

West Indies’ Gudakesh Motie was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four wickets for 41 runs, while Jayden Seales impressed with his pace and movement, taking two for 22.

England’s batting woes continued throughout the innings, with only Livingstone (48 runs) and Sam Curran (41 runs) offering any resistance. Several English batsmen miscued shots and fell to catches inside the 30-yard circle.

“We didn’t read conditions as well as we could have,” Livingstone admitted after the match. “We have to get up to speed as quickly as possible and get into the rhythms of 50-over cricket.”

This crushing defeat marks a disappointing start to England’s latest white-ball regeneration and continues a trend of struggles in the Caribbean. This is their fifth tour of the region in the past three years and they have lost all four previous series.

The series continues with the second ODI on Wednesday.
