**New Delhi:** Dr. Bibek Debroy, a prominent economist and chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, passed away on Friday. He was 69.

Debroy, known for his expertise in various fields including economics, history, culture, politics, and spirituality, had been associated with several key Indian institutions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Debroy a “towering scholar” who left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape.

Debroy had a distinguished academic career, graduating from prestigious institutions like Ramkrishna Mission School in Narendrapur, Presidency College in Kolkata, Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He served in various positions at Presidency College, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi, and also as Director of the Finance Ministry/UNDP project on legal reforms.

He was a member of the NITI Aayog until June 5, 2019. Debroy is also credited with authoring and editing numerous books, research papers, and popular articles, and he was an advisor and contributing editor for several newspapers.

His demise is a significant loss to the Indian academic and policy-making circles. His contributions and insights will be deeply missed.
