Wed Oct 30 12:39:27 UTC 2024: ## NASA Astronaut Hospitalized After Record-Breaking Space Mission
**Pensacola, Florida -** Three astronauts from NASA’s Crew-8 mission returned to Earth on Friday after a record-breaking 235-day stay on the International Space Station. However, the homecoming was marred by an unexpected development: one astronaut was hospitalized following the splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.
The crew, which also included a Russian cosmonaut, landed safely off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, after launching in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule in early March. Upon arrival, the astronauts were transported to a medical facility near the landing site.
While three crew members were cleared for travel and flown to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, one astronaut remained hospitalized for an undisclosed “medical issue.”
“To protect the crew member’s medical privacy, specific details on the individual’s condition or identity will not be shared,” stated NASA news chief Cheryl Warner. The agency confirmed that the hospitalized astronaut is in “stable condition under observation as a precautionary measure.”
This incident highlights the potential risks associated with long-duration space missions, even with routine medical evaluations after returning to Earth. Astronauts often experience physiological changes after prolonged periods in zero gravity and require time to readjust.
Despite the unexpected hospitalization, NASA maintains that the Crew-8 mission was a success, setting a new record for the longest duration of a U.S. crewed spaceflight.
