**Chittagong, Bangladesh** – Bangladesh’s experienced spinner Taijul Islam has expressed his willingness to take over the Test captaincy if current captain Najimul Shanto decides to step down. Speculation has been rife that Shanto might relinquish the role following the ongoing series against South Africa.
Speaking ahead of the second Test, Taijul confirmed he had not received any official word about Shanto’s decision. “I haven’t heard anything on this matter,” he said, adding, “Having played for 10 years, I’m fully prepared (for captaincy).”
Taijul also acknowledged the recent departures of key players like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal during series, suggesting the team is not immune to outside pressures. “This is a team game,” he emphasized. “Some players may be affected by outside events, while others can continue their role with calmness. Personally, I try to stay relaxed and focus on my work.”
Looking ahead to the second Test, Taijul stressed the importance of a strong batting performance to salvage the series after the disappointing loss in the first match. “Our goal remains the same: we’ll play to win,” he stated. “If we can build two or three partnerships in a game, and one or two players score a century, our target will be much bigger.”
The second Test between Bangladesh and South Africa is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 29th in Chittagong.
