Wed Oct 30 12:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Stevie Nicks Opens Up About Abortion and the Loss of Christine McVie on “Sunday Morning”

In a candid interview with Tracy Smith on CBS News “Sunday Morning,” Stevie Nicks reflected on her personal journey, including her decision to have an abortion in the late 1970s and the devastating loss of her longtime musical partner, Christine McVie.

Nicks, known for her iconic work with Fleetwood Mac, revealed she had an abortion in 1979, a decision she made at the height of the band’s success. She explained that, as a touring musician, motherhood wasn’t feasible, and that having a child with Don Henley during a turbulent time with Fleetwood Mac would have been a “nightmare scenario.”

Addressing the ongoing debate surrounding reproductive rights, Nicks, who penned the new song “The Lighthouse” as a rallying cry for women’s rights, expressed her frustration with those who condemn her choice. “I’d like to know, so are you just the few guys who are making the decisions for us?” she asked, emphasizing that the ultimate choice is hers.

Nicks also spoke about the profound loss of McVie, whom she called her musical soulmate. She shared the heartbreak of not being able to say goodbye to her friend and described her ongoing grief through a moving tribute she performs at the end of her concerts.

Despite the sadness, Nicks stressed that McVie’s spirit lives on in her heart. “She’s in my heart,” she said, wearing a necklace containing some of McVie’s ashes.

Nicks concluded the interview by expressing her hope that “The Lighthouse,” despite its deeply personal message, will resonate with listeners and spark important conversations. “This song should not be censored. It should go out into the world and do what it’s gonna do, maybe change some minds,” she stated, adding that she considers it her responsibility as an artist to use her voice for the issues that matter most.
