Wed Oct 30 08:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Tarantino Lauds “Joker: Folie à Deux” as “Really Funny” Despite Box Office Flop
Despite its critical panning and disappointing box office performance, Quentin Tarantino has come out in strong support of “Joker: Folie à Deux”. The director, known for his own cult classic films, praised the musical sequel during a recent podcast appearance, stating that he “really, really liked it” and found himself “caught up into it”.
Tarantino specifically lauded Joaquin Phoenix’s performance, calling it “one of the best I’ve ever seen”. He also expressed admiration for director Todd Phillips’s “fuck you” attitude towards the studio, the audience, and Hollywood.
The film, which cost a hefty $200 million to produce, premiered at the Venice Film Festival to largely negative reviews and has so far grossed less than $201 million worldwide. This pales in comparison to its predecessor, “Joker”, which amassed over $1 billion globally.
Despite the commercial disappointment, “Joker: Folie à Deux” has found its fair share of supporters. Fellow filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, currently facing his own box office flop with “Megalopolis”, lauded the film on Instagram, praising Phillips’s bold and unpredictable approach.
However, not all directors are on board. Paul Schrader, who wrote the screenplay for “Taxi Driver”, which served as inspiration for the first “Joker”, admitted to watching only a small portion of the film and found it insufficient to pique his interest.
Tarantino’s endorsement, coupled with Coppola’s praise, suggests that “Joker: Folie à Deux” might find its niche audience despite the critical and commercial backlash.
