**Philadelphia, PA** – The race for the White House is tightening in Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state, according to recent polls. While a new Emerson poll shows former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris by one point, polling averages paint a picture of a virtually deadlocked contest.
The Emerson poll released Thursday found Trump with 49% support compared to Harris’s 48%. This mirrors the results of their previous poll conducted on October 10th. However, other polls released this week show a closer contest. A Bloomberg/Morning Consult survey puts Harris ahead by 1.8 points, while a Washington Post/Schar School poll gives her a two-point advantage.
The polling averages, compiled by FiveThirtyEight, RealClearPolitics, and Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin, show a near-tie in Pennsylvania. These averages, however, give Trump a slight edge, with a 52.1% chance of winning the state according to Silver’s model.
Pennsylvania holds significant weight in the election, boasting 19 electoral votes, more than any other battleground state. Historically, the candidate who wins Pennsylvania has also won Michigan and Wisconsin, collectively known as the “blue wall,” in the past eight elections. According to Silver’s model, securing Pennsylvania offers both candidates a greater than 85% chance of winning the presidency.
The state’s large population of white, working-class voters, a demographic Trump typically performs well with, is a key factor in the tight race. Harris has made strides with this demographic, trailing Trump by just three points nationally, according to a recent PBS News/NPR/Marist poll.
The economy is a major concern for Pennsylvanian voters, with 82% citing it as a primary factor in their 2024 vote, according to a CBS/YouGov survey. Inflation (78%) and the state of democracy (70%) also rank high among voter concerns.
The debate over fracking, a key industry in Pennsylvania, has emerged as a point of contention. Trump has criticized Harris for her previous support of a fracking ban, while Harris has since clarified her stance, emphasizing her support for the industry.
With the election still months away, the race in Pennsylvania is expected to remain tight. Both campaigns are actively campaigning in the state, highlighting the critical role it plays in the national election.
