Wed Oct 30 13:42:34 UTC 2024: ## Canada-India Relations Sink Amid Sikh Separatist Tensions and Murder Allegations

**Surrey, Canada -** The murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh separatist leader, outside a Surrey gurdwara in June 2023, sparked a diplomatic crisis between Canada and India. Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, campaigned for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland, “Khalistan.”

Following the murder, Canada accused Indian government agents of involvement, pausing trade talks with India and expelling India’s top intelligence officer. In retaliation, India suspended Canadian visas, reduced diplomatic presence in Canada, and expelled a Canadian diplomat.

Adding to the escalating tensions, the US also intervened, alleging a plot to kill another Sikh separatist leader, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, in New York. The US accused India of involvement, leading to a meeting between US and Indian officials to investigate the matter.

Further fueling the controversy, the Washington Post reported that an Indian intelligence officer was directly involved in both Nijjar’s killing and the foiled plot against Pannun. While India denied the allegations, the US charged a former Indian government official with directing the plot against Pannun.

Amidst this diplomatic turmoil, Canadian authorities arrested and charged four individuals linked to Nijjar’s murder. Canada also expelled six Indian diplomats, including the High Commissioner, alleging their involvement in Nijjar’s death. India retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats and accusing Canada of pursuing a political agenda.

The situation remains tense with both countries locked in a diplomatic standoff, raising concerns about the future of their bilateral relations. The murder of Nijjar has exposed the simmering tensions surrounding the Sikh separatist movement and its impact on global geopolitics.
