Tue Oct 29 16:59:01 UTC 2024: ## Ancient Statue of Lord Kubera Found in Vidisha, a Testament to City’s Rich History
**Vidisha, India:** The Archaeological Museum in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, houses the tallest and oldest statue of Lord Kubera, the Hindu deity of wealth, in India. The statue, discovered in the 1950s, stands 12 feet tall and is estimated to be 2,200 years old. Notably, the museum also holds a 7-foot-tall statue of Kubera’s wife, Yakshini, dating back to the same period.
Historians believe that Vidisha, once a thriving trade center, was a place of great prosperity during ancient times, leading to the creation and worship of Kubera statues. The city still observes the practice of worshipping Kubera on Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, which falls on October 29th this year.
The statue of Kubera in Vidisha was found in the Bes River, where it was mistaken for a rock by locals who used it for washing clothes. A local artist, Raghunath Singh, noticed the statue when the river’s water levels were low and alerted authorities. The Archaeological Department retrieved the statue and placed it in the museum, where it remains a significant historical artifact.
This remarkable discovery sheds light on the city’s rich past and its connection to the worship of Kubera. The statue’s presence in Vidisha continues to attract visitors and is considered an important symbol of the city’s historical significance. The museum’s curator, Namrata Yadav, emphasizes the importance of the statue to Vidisha, noting its representation on Reserve Bank of India currency notes.
