Tue Oct 29 03:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Yankees Reliever Tommy Kahnle Throws 56 Straight Changeups in Postseason
New York Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle has been riding a unique streak this postseason, throwing an astonishing 56 straight changeups. Kahnle, known for his heavy reliance on the pitch, admitted with a laugh that maybe he’s been a bit too predictable.
“Mix in a fastball, I guess?” he said, acknowledging his singular approach.
Kahnle’s last non-changeup pitch came during Game 2 of the ALCS on October 15th, when he threw an eighth-inning fastball that resulted in a line-drive single by Cleveland Guardians’ Brayan Rocchio.
Kahnle’s reliance on the changeup isn’t a new phenomenon. He used the pitch 73.1% of the time this season, a rate leading all of Major League Baseball.
“I’m going to use it,” Kahnle asserted. “It’s my pitch. It’s just basically about executing it and not leaving it in bad places to get hit hard.”
While Kahnle’s dedication to the changeup is notable, it remains to be seen if he’ll start incorporating his fastball again in the coming games. His opponents will certainly be watching closely for any signs of a change in strategy.
