Tue Oct 29 02:00:00 UTC 2024: ## North Korean Troops Deployed in Ukraine: NATO Confirms Escalation of War

**BRUSSELS (AP)** – NATO has confirmed reports that North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia to aid in its war against Ukraine. The move, which is expected to intensify the conflict now in its third year, has sparked alarm bells across the globe.

Pentagon officials revealed that around 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been dispatched to Russia, with some already positioned near the Kursk border region, where Ukraine has been pushing back against Russian forces.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the deployment as a “significant escalation” and “a dangerous expansion of Russia’s war,” echoing sentiments expressed by U.S. President Joe Biden, who labeled the development “very dangerous.”

Western officials fear that the addition of North Korean troops will further strain Ukraine’s already overburdened army, while also escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

The deployment comes as Russia seeks to bolster its military presence in Ukraine, having already received support from Iran in the form of drones and ammunition from North Korea.

While Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed the NATO confirmation, citing a joint security pact signed with North Korea last June, he did not deny the presence of North Korean soldiers on Russian soil.

The news comes as Ukraine faces continued pressure in the eastern Donetsk region, and as the upcoming U.S. presidential election could potentially impact the level of military support provided to Ukraine.

In response to the escalating conflict, NATO is actively consulting with its allies, Ukraine, and its partners in the Indo-Pacific region to determine appropriate responses.

The deployment of North Korean troops represents a dramatic escalation in the war, and its implications for global stability remain unclear.
