**New Delhi** – Dhanteras, celebrated before Diwali, is a festival marking the arrival of prosperity, health, and wealth. On this day, devotees worship Lord Dhanvantri, the god of health, and Kubera, the god of wealth.

Traditionally, people purchase gold, silver, new utensils, jewelry, and even brooms on Dhanteras. The purchase of a broom is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity, symbolizing the removal of negativity and welcoming positive energy into the home.

According to Pandit Dinesh Kumar Mishra, a scholar, Dhanvantri, the deity of health, emerged from the ocean of milk with a pot of nectar on this very day. This signifies the importance of health and wellness, making the purchase of brass utensils, representing the pot of nectar, a significant practice.

Pandit Mishra further highlights the importance of buying coriander seeds on this day, due to their medicinal properties. He explains that the tradition of purchasing a broom on Dhanteras is linked to the preparation for Diwali, as people clean their homes before the festival. Similarly, the purchase of new utensils is associated with the installation of a new pot (kalash) during Diwali.

Purchasing gold and silver on Dhanteras is considered highly auspicious, and many people also buy new clothes on this day.

The festival of Dhanteras is a celebration of prosperity, good health, and the arrival of positive energy. By purchasing items symbolic of these values, people hope to invite wealth, well-being, and happiness into their homes.
