**London, England -** Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed frustration over the ongoing injury problems plaguing his squad, but he is hopeful for the return of captain Bruno Fernandes and Jonny Evans for Sunday’s Premier League clash against West Ham United.
Fernandes missed Thursday’s Europa League draw against Fenerbahce due to a one-match ban, while Evans picked up an injury during the Brentford game last weekend. The Red Devils are currently 12th in the Premier League with 11 points after eight matches and are looking to build on their recent 2-1 victory over Brentford.
“We have to be ready, it’s a short turnaround and we expect Bruno back, and hopefully also Jonny Evans,” ten Hag told reporters.
The Dutchman remains uncertain about the status of Antony, who was taken off on a stretcher during the Fenerbahce game, and the team is still without injured Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire. Ten Hag acknowledged the impact of the injuries on their league position and performance.
“Yeah, that holds us back in our levels, and also in our position in the league,” he said. “When you don’t have the players available, you can’t line up the best team, and that is what’s holding us back in this moment.”
However, ten Hag remains optimistic about the team’s potential when fully fit, stating “When we have them, we can be really successful, and that is what we have shown over the last couple of months.”
He expressed confidence in new midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who had a strong performance against Fenerbahce, adding “For sure, the six position is a key position in your team, and (Ugarte) has to learn this position in our game model. I think (Thursday) is a step forward, so I’m really pleased with his performance, and from here on he has to build on it.”
Manchester United will be hoping for a return to form at the London Stadium against West Ham, as they look to climb the Premier League table and compete on multiple fronts.
