Mumbai, India – The legendary Ratan Tata, former chairman of the Tata Group, passed away on October 9th at the age of 86, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, innovation, and philanthropy. His will, valued at Rs 10,000 crore, reflects his deep commitment to social welfare and his unwavering loyalty to those who served him.

The Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), a non-profit organization established in 2022, is the primary beneficiary of the estate. It will receive a significant portion of Tata’s fortune, including his shares in Tata Sons and other Tata Group companies. This will allow the foundation to significantly expand its charitable work, aligning with Tata’s vision of giving back to society.

Current Tata Sons chairman, N Chandrasekaran, is expected to play a leading role in managing the foundation, ensuring its activities continue to uphold Tata’s philanthropic principles. RTEF has already made notable investments, including Rs 147 crore in Tata Technologies and a stake in Tata Digital, the company behind the popular platform Tata Neu.

Beyond the foundation, Tata’s will also includes provisions for his close family members, loyal staff, and even his beloved German Shepherd, Tito. His brother, Jimmy Tata, and half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, are among the beneficiaries.

Tata’s longstanding staff, including his cook, Rajan Shaw, and his butler, Subbiah, are also recognized in the will, reflecting his deep appreciation for their years of dedicated service. His close confidante and executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu, will also receive a share of the inheritance, along with a gesture of forgiveness for a personal loan Naidu took for his education.

In a unique gesture, Tata ensured unlimited care for Tito, his beloved dog. Rajan Shaw, who already cares for Tito, will continue to do so, with resources allocated for his lifelong wellbeing.

The future of Tata’s personal collection of luxury cars, including 20-30 vehicles, is still being decided. Options include auctioning the cars or putting them on public display to honour his legacy.

Other key properties, such as Tata’s beachfront bungalow in Alibaug and his Mumbai residence, are also part of the estate, with decisions about their future pending.

Tata’s will is currently awaiting probate at the Bombay High Court, which will confirm its validity and ensure proper execution. As India mourns the loss of this remarkable industrialist and philanthropist, his legacy continues to inspire, with his will serving as a testament to his unwavering commitment to social responsibility and personal loyalty.
