Following China’s Golden Week holiday, air cargo tonnages from China to Europe have returned to pre-holiday levels. Meanwhile, Hong Kong to Europe tonnages have seen a significant increase in the past six weeks, with week 42 (October 14-20) recording a 25% increase compared to the same period last year.
Furthermore, Hong Kong to Europe tonnages in weeks 40-42 were 12% higher than their average weekly levels in September.
On the pricing front, average spot rates from Hong Kong to Europe have remained above US$5 per kilo for the past seven weeks, fluctuating between US$5.04 and US$5.31, reaching US$5.15 in week 42. China to Europe spot rates have also rebounded to US$4.29 per kilo, with both routes experiencing a 13% increase compared to last year’s levels.
While the Asian market shows strong recovery, global average rates have edged up slightly in the second full week of October, with a slight decline in tonnages from most major regions, particularly from the Middle East & South Asia (MESA) origins.
Experts anticipate a surge in tonnages in the final weeks of the year, mirroring patterns observed in week 42 of last year.
