**Mumbai, India:** A stampede at Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus railway station on Sunday morning left nine people injured, two of whom are in critical condition. The incident occurred as a large crowd attempted to board the 22921 Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express, which was being brought to platform number 1.
According to reports, a rush of passengers attempting to board the train resulted in the stampede. The incident happened at 5:56 am as many people were heading back to their hometowns for the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals.
“The Antyodaya Express, with all 22 general compartments empty, was being brought to platform number 1 when people, who were waiting for the train, tried to board it,” said a railway source. The situation worsened when passengers attempted to enter the train while it was still being moved, while the doors were closed.
Witnesses reported that some people fell onto the platform while trying to board the train. The injured were immediately taken to Bhabha Hospital for treatment.
The injured have been identified as Shabir Abdul Rahman (40), Parmeshwar Sukhder Gupta (28), Ravindra Harihar Chuma (30), Ramsevak Ravindra Prasad Prajapati (29), Sanjay Tilakram Kange (27), Divyanshu Yogendra Yadav (18), Mohammad Sharif Sheikh (25), Inderjit Sahani (19) and Noor Mohammad Sheikh (18).
A police official confirmed that Sahani and Noor Mohammad Sheikh are in critical condition. Despite the incident, the Antyodaya Express departed from Bandra Terminus for its journey to Gorakhpur almost on schedule.
Authorities have attributed the stampede to the heavy rush on trains traveling from Mumbai to northern India during this festive season.
