Sun Oct 27 12:01:07 UTC 2024: ## Anjalai Ammal, Forgotten Freedom Fighter, Takes Center Stage at Vijay’s Tamil Nadu Victory Party Conference
The upcoming Tamil Nadu Victory Party (TVP) conference, led by actor Vijay, is set to be a grand affair. While the event will be graced by the presence of prominent political figures like Periyar, Ambedkar, and Kamaraj, one particular cut-out has caught the attention of many: Anjalai Ammal.
Anjalai Ammal, a valiant freedom fighter from Tamil Nadu, is often overlooked in the annals of Indian history. Born in 1890 in Cuddalore, she was deeply patriotic, despite her limited education. She actively participated in the freedom struggle, joining Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement.
Her courage was evident during the protest against the statue of Neelan, a British official responsible for the killing of Indian soldiers during the Sepoy Mutiny. Anjalai Ammal, along with her nine-year-old daughter, fearlessly participated in the protest, which led to their arrest and imprisonment.
Even during her imprisonment, Anjalai Ammal continued to fight for her country. She was arrested again in 1932 for her participation in the freedom movement while pregnant. Her confinement in Vellore Prison did not deter her spirit, and she remained resolute in her commitment to independence.
After India’s independence, Anjalai Ammal served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly on three occasions, highlighting her continued dedication to public service.
The presence of Anjalai Ammal’s cut-out alongside other notable figures at the TVP conference serves as a reminder of the unsung heroes of India’s freedom struggle. This recognition of a forgotten freedom fighter is a testament to the growing awareness of the crucial role women played in the fight for independence.
