**CLEVELAND** – The New York Yankees are making lineup changes for Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians. Manager Aaron Boone announced that Jon Berti will start at first base in place of Anthony Rizzo, while Jose Trevino will start behind the plate instead of Austin Wells.
The changes are largely due to the Yankees facing left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd, with Boone citing typical “splits” as the reasoning. Rizzo and Wells are both left-handed hitters, while Berti and Trevino bat right-handed.
However, there are other factors at play. Rizzo is playing with two fractured fingers on his right hand, an injury he suffered in September. While he has shown some improvement, Boone wants to be cautious about his health. Meanwhile, Berti impressed in the previous series with strong defense and solid hitting.
Wells, who was in the running for AL Rookie of the Year, has struggled at the plate in recent weeks. Despite his struggles, Boone maintains confidence in Wells’ ability to perform in big situations.
Trevino, an All-Star in 2022, lost his starting job to Wells but has now been brought back into the fold.
The Yankees, currently holding a 2-0 series lead, will look to build upon their advantage as they head into Game 3.
