**Jigawa, Nigeria** – A fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria’s Jigawa state has claimed the lives of at least 94 people, the latest in a string of deadly accidents involving fuel tankers in the country.
The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when a tanker driver lost control of his vehicle on a highway near a university, according to police spokesperson Lawan Adam. Residents, drawn to the scene of the overturned tanker, were attempting to collect fuel when the explosion occurred, triggering a massive inferno that killed 94 people instantly.
This tragedy follows a similar incident last month in Niger State, where a fuel tanker collided with another truck, resulting in the deaths of 48 people and the burning of 50 cattle.
Nigeria’s lack of an efficient railway system for cargo transport has led to a significant reliance on trucks, making fatal road accidents common. In 2020 alone, there were over 1,500 gasoline tanker crashes resulting in hundreds of fatalities and injuries, according to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps.
The recent series of fuel tanker explosions highlights the ongoing safety concerns in Nigeria’s transport sector and the need for improved infrastructure and regulations to prevent such tragedies.
