Fri Oct 18 11:22:23 UTC 2024: ## IPL Owners Meet to Discuss Major Changes for 2025 Season

**Mumbai, India** – The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up for significant changes in its player regulations ahead of the 2025 season. A recent meeting between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL franchise owners saw a flurry of proposals aimed at enhancing the league’s competitiveness and fostering player development.

The most contentious issue discussed was the “Impact Player” rule, which has been criticized for hindering the growth of allrounders. Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal, echoing the sentiments of India’s captain Rohit Sharma, called for its scrapping. Jindal also advocated for a return to traditional 11-vs-11 contests, doing away with the impact player rule.

The retention policy for 2025 was also a hot topic. Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran proposed allowing franchises to retain a minimum of seven players, including a larger number of overseas players. Maran also pushed for the reintroduction of the “Right-to-Match” card, allowing teams to match the highest bid for a player they wish to retain.

Discussions on the frequency of mega auctions were divided. Some owners, including Jindal, favored the existing five-year cycle to maintain competitive balance. Others proposed eliminating them altogether in favor of smaller, more frequent auctions. Maran suggested that a mini-auction could suffice for 2025, with the existing core players providing continuity.

The meeting also saw proposals for greater flexibility in negotiating retention amounts with players, with franchises suggesting a system based on a total retention budget.

To incentivize teams investing in young talent, a special category for uncapped players was also proposed. This would provide more opportunities and exposure for these players, rewarding franchises for their efforts in developing future stars.

The proposals discussed are now under evaluation by the IPL governing council. The final player regulations for the 2025 season are expected to be announced by the end of August.
