**Bengaluru, India:** A disastrous batting performance saw India bowled out for a paltry 46 runs on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, marking the lowest total in a home Test for the hosts.
Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke were the architects of India’s downfall, claiming 5-15 and 4-22 respectively. Five Indian batsmen, including captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin, were dismissed for ducks, highlighting the dominance of the New Zealand bowling attack.
Only Rishabh Pant (20) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) managed to reach double figures, as the Indian batting lineup crumbled under pressure. This dismal total is the third lowest in India’s Test history, surpassed only by their 36 all out against Australia in Adelaide in 2020 and 42 against England at Lord’s in 1974.
In stark contrast, New Zealand reached 180-3 by stumps, securing a commanding lead of 134 runs. Devon Conway, with a well-crafted 91 runs, was the standout performer for the visitors, while Tom Latham also made a significant contribution to the opening partnership of 67 runs.
“I’m hurting a little bit because I made that call… the challenges that were thrown at us, we didn’t respond to well and found ourselves in a situation where we got bowled out for 46,” admitted a dejected Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, acknowledging the team’s failure to adapt to the challenging pitch conditions.
New Zealand, now in complete control, will be looking to capitalize on their dominant performance and secure a resounding victory in the first Test. India, on the other hand, face an uphill battle to salvage their pride and avoid a humiliating defeat.
