**MAJA, NIGERIA -** A horrific fuel tanker explosion in northern Nigeria has claimed the lives of over 140 people, with the death toll expected to climb further. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday in the town of Majia, Jigawa state, when a tanker crashed, spilling fuel that ignited as residents rushed to collect it.
Nura Abdullahi, spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the devastating loss of life, stating that over 140 victims have been buried in a mass grave.
The explosion occurred in the Taura local government area, approximately 530 kilometers north of the capital Abuja. The injured were transported to hospitals in nearby towns, where they are receiving treatment.
Jigawa State Police Command spokesperson Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the incident and stated that a mass burial for the deceased will be held later today.
This tragic event highlights the ongoing dangers posed by poorly maintained roads in Nigeria. The country, Africa’s most populous, suffers from frequent accidents due to the state of its roads, leading to numerous fatalities each year. Just last month, another fuel tanker explosion in north-central Nigeria resulted in the deaths of at least 48 people.
