Fri Oct 18 06:06:03 UTC 2024: ## Sabarimala Path Development Lags, Completion Uncertain Before Pilgrimage
**Karikkulam:** Concerns are rising over the slow pace of development work on the Chethokkara-Athikkayam Sabarimala path, raising doubts about its completion before the upcoming pilgrimage season.
The widening and concretization of the path, along with the construction of retaining walls in waterlogged areas, are underway. The project aims to expand the path to a width of 10-12 meters. Despite a previous tarring project in 2021, the lack of funds had stalled the widening efforts. The current rehabilitation project is estimated to cost approximately INR 6 crore.
Local residents along the path have generously donated land for widening, with the PWD undertaking the reconstruction of demolished structures, including walls and pathways. Several trees obstructing the path have also been cleared.
However, the project faces significant delays, with work being conducted intermittently on different sections. While retaining wall construction between Chethokkara and Anjukuzi was recently completed, it remains unfinished at several other points. The lack of progress near the Anjukuzi Divine Mercy Ashram and the Chethokkara timber mill raises concerns about the project’s timely completion.
The current situation poses a serious safety hazard for vehicles navigating the narrow path, especially at bends. With the pilgrimage season approaching, the incomplete nature of the project casts a shadow of uncertainty over its timely completion.
