**Chennai, October 17, 2024:** The story of Valmiki, author of the epic Ramayana, is a testament to the transformative power of self-realization, according to scholar S. Perundevi.
Valmiki’s journey began as a hunter, leading a life far from the asceticism of a sage. However, a chance encounter with the seven sages (saptarishis) led him to confront the ethical implications of his actions. The sages pointed out the sin of indiscriminate killing and challenged Valmiki to seek accountability from his family. To his dismay, they refused to share the burden of his actions, ultimately prompting him to seek answers.
The sages guided him to the path of enlightenment by advising him to chant the name of Rama with unwavering faith. Initially unable to pronounce the syllables, Valmiki was instructed to chant the name of a nearby tree. Through repeated chanting and deep belief, the syllables miraculously merged into the sacred “Rama namam.”
Immersed in meditation, an anthill (valmikam) grew around him, symbolizing his transformation. When the sages returned, they removed the anthill, revealing a fully realized soul – Valmiki. His devotion and unwavering faith had earned him divine blessings, including the gift of Saraswati’s grace and the ability to compose epics.
Brahma himself entrusted Valmiki with the sacred task of writing the Ramayana, urging him to “enrich the human legacy with the sum of your realization.” This tale serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of faith, devotion, and the pursuit of self-realization.
