**Bengaluru:** A disastrous batting performance saw India crumble to a paltry 46 all out on Day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, leaving them in a precarious position.
The day began with India winning the toss and electing to bat. However, their decision backfired spectacularly as they lost their first three wickets within the first 10 overs. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Sarfaraz Khan all fell without scoring, leaving the hosts reeling.
The rain, which had already delayed the start of the match, returned and further hampered India’s progress. Despite a brief period of resistance from Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) and Rishabh Pant (20), the wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.
New Zealand’s pace bowling attack, led by Matt Henry (5 wickets for 15 runs) and William O’Rourke (4 wickets for 22 runs), proved too much for the Indian batsmen.
The hosts’ batting woes continued into the lunch break, with the score reading a dismal 34/6. The only two batsmen to reach double figures were Jaiswal and Pant.
New Zealand, in their turn, began their innings cautiously but steadily, reaching 142/2 at tea. Devon Conway, who was dismissed for 91, played a crucial role with a fluent innings that featured 11 fours and 3 sixes.
However, India managed to pick up two quick wickets after tea, with Kuldeep Yadav taking the crucial scalps of Will Young (33) and Tom Latham (15).
With a strong position established, New Zealand will be looking to build on their lead in the remaining sessions of the day, aiming to secure a decisive advantage in the series.
The day concluded with New Zealand comfortably ahead at 142/2, putting them in a commanding position at the end of Day 2. The remaining sessions of the match promise to be exciting as India fight back to try and salvage something from this precarious situation.
