Wed Oct 16 13:42:02 UTC 2024: ## Kaziranga National Park Boasts Second Highest Butterfly Diversity in India
**Guwahati, Oct 16 (PTI):** Kaziranga National Park, renowned for its one-horned rhinoceros, has been declared the second most diverse butterfly habitat in India, with over 446 species recorded. This discovery was made by Dr. Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi, a scientist at Kaziranga, after years of dedicated research and observation.
Dr. Gogoi’s comprehensive survey, which included areas like the Panbari Reserve Forest, revealed a rich tapestry of butterfly species, including 18 previously undocumented in India. These new additions include the Burmese Threering, Glassy Cerulean, Dark-bordered Hedge Blue, and Andaman Yellow Banded Flat.
This record is especially notable as Kaziranga lies outside the Himalayan and Patkai mountain ranges, which are usually associated with high biodiversity. Dr. Gogoi emphasizes the need for greater awareness about butterfly conservation in the region, advocating for further research, monitoring, and habitat protection.
The Chief Minister’s Office has congratulated Dr. Gogoi for his remarkable achievement, highlighting his contribution to enriching India’s biodiversity research. Dr. Gogoi’s new pictorial guidebook on butterflies, documenting the 446 species found in Kaziranga, further strengthens the understanding of the region’s incredible biodiversity.
