Thu Oct 17 17:22:52 UTC 2024: ## Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar Killed in Israeli Operation
**GAZA CITY** – Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas and mastermind behind last year’s devastating October 7 attacks on Israel, was killed in an Israeli military operation in Gaza on Thursday, according to Israeli officials.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz confirmed the killing, calling Sinwar a “mass murderer” responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7th. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) also confirmed Sinwar’s death in a statement on X, stating that “Yahya Sinwar was eliminated.”
The IDF said troops engaged and killed a group of fighters located on the ground floor of a building in Gaza, following an incident that began on Wednesday. While the IDF confirmed the death of three terrorists, the military initially declined to confirm Sinwar’s identity. However, Israeli officials later confirmed his death after conducting DNA analysis.
The US was reportedly informed of the operation and its outcome.
Sinwar, born in 1962, was a founding member of Hamas and served as its chief since August, following the death of his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh. He was known for his ruthless tactics against suspected collaborators and had been imprisoned by Israel in the late 1980s for killing 12 individuals accused of being informants. He received four life sentences but was released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange.
Sinwar, alongside Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas’s armed wing, is believed to have orchestrated the October 7 attack that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis. This assault triggered a conflict that has claimed over 40,000 Palestinian lives in Gaza, according to Palestinian authorities.
The death of Sinwar is likely to have significant implications for the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. His leadership has been a key factor in the recent escalation of violence, and his removal could potentially lead to a change in the dynamics of the conflict.
