**London, UK** – Renowned fashion designer Pamella Roland and actress Vanessa Williams faced a whirlwind race against time to create a stunning wardrobe for the highly anticipated “The Devil Wears Prada” musical, set to debut in London’s West End on October 24th.
With only two months to work, Roland, known for her exquisite designs, had to juggle her own line, her son’s wedding preparations, and this demanding project. “It was tough,” she confessed to Page Six Style, “the biggest challenge was the time constraint.”
Williams, portraying the formidable Runway magazine editor, Miranda Priestly, commands the stage in a dazzling array of costumes, most designed and sourced by Roland. Inspired by the 2006 film adaptation, but aiming for a distinct identity, the duo created a wardrobe that pays homage to the original while reflecting Williams’ unique presence.
“We knew Miranda Priestly had to be sophisticated, and we didn’t want her to be the same as Meryl [Streep],” Roland explained. “Vanessa is a different person, so I took inspiration from the film, but also from Vanessa herself.”
While remaining tight-lipped about specific outfits, Roland revealed a personal touch: an item from her own closet made it into the final wardrobe. A “jacquard item with some feathers on the sleeve,” discovered by Williams during a visit to Roland’s home.
Williams, known for her captivating performances, found the role of Miranda Priestly irresistible. “I knew I really wanted to do this,” she said, “it’s such a great franchise and I knew I could kill it.”
The actress acknowledged drawing inspiration from Meryl Streep’s portrayal but added, “Of course, there’s music added to that which heightens the action.”
Composer Sir Elton John, who expressed hopes for Williams to win a Tony Award for her performance, is confident the musical will captivate audiences. The show, directed by Jerry Mitchell, promises a captivating experience, combining the original story’s charm with the magic of musical theatre.
The anticipation for “The Devil Wears Prada” musical is high, and with a formidable team behind it, the West End premiere promises to be a fashion-forward spectacle.
