Thu Oct 17 18:04:02 UTC 2024: ## Government Announces 3% DA Hike for Central Employees Ahead of Diwali

**New Delhi, October [Date]** – In a move aimed at providing financial relief to central government employees and pensioners ahead of the Diwali festivities, the Union Cabinet has approved a 3% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA). This increase brings the total DA to 53% of basic pay, adding an estimated Rs. 9,448 crore annually to the salaries of central government employees.

The hike, which will be effective from July 2024, is expected to significantly enhance the disposable income of employees, particularly as they prepare for the festive season. The government will also adjust Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners accordingly.

“This is a positive step that will provide much-needed relief to government employees facing rising inflation,” said Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The DA hike is determined based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI), which reflects the government’s commitment to supporting its employees against the rising cost of living. The DA is revised twice a year, ensuring that the purchasing power of employees and pensioners remains stable despite fluctuating market conditions.

This 3% increase follows a previous 4% hike in March 2024, which brought the DA to 50%. The government typically reviews these adjustments biannually, in January and July, with announcements often made in March and September.

The timing of the announcement, just ahead of Diwali, is seen as a strategic move to boost consumer spending and bring a festive cheer to central government employees and pensioners.

While discussions regarding the 8th Pay Commission are ongoing, the government’s focus remains on addressing inflation through strategic measures, including DA increases. This latest approval signifies a commitment to supporting government employees during challenging economic times, ensuring that they are able to enjoy the Diwali festivities with greater financial comfort.
