Wed Oct 16 12:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Rohit Sharma’s Availability for Australia Tests Uncertain, Bumrah Eyed as Potential Captain
Indian captain Rohit Sharma has refused to comment on reports suggesting he might miss one of the first two Test matches against Australia later this year due to a personal matter. However, he has hinted that Jasprit Bumrah would be the ideal replacement if needed.
“Bumrah has played a lot of cricket. He understands the game pretty well,” said Rohit. “He’s got a good head on his shoulders. When you talk to him, he understands the game.”
Bumrah was recently appointed vice-captain for the upcoming New Zealand series, fueling speculation about his potential leadership role in Australia. He has previously led India in a Test against England and in a T20I series against Ireland.
“He understands what is required. When you are in a situation where you need a leader to step up, I think Bumrah will be one of them,” Rohit added.
While Rohit’s participation in the Australia series remains uncertain, a BCCI source has confirmed that he has informed the board about a potential absence for one of the first two Tests. The 37-year-old captain could still play all five matches if the personal matter is resolved before the series begins.
In Rohit’s absence, Abhimanyu Easwaran is the frontrunner to fill the opening slot. However, experienced players like Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are also potential options. Easwaran is currently leading the India A team in Australia.
