Malayalam filmmaker Amal Neerad’s latest offering, “Bougainvillea”, is a psychological thriller starring Kunchacko Boban and Jyothirmayi. The film marks a departure from Neerad’s previous work, including the 2022 hit “Bheeshma Parvam”, and delves into the complexities of amnesia.
Based on Lajo George’s novel “Ruthinte Lokam”, the film follows a patient with retrograde and anterograde amnesia who becomes the focus of a police investigation. Neerad masterfully uses cinematic techniques to build suspense, initially emphasizing visual storytelling before gradually unveiling the plot.
Jyothirmayi delivers a compelling performance as Reethu, the amnesiac patient, whose daily routine of painting bougainvillea flowers mirrors the mystery surrounding her. Kunchacko Boban also shines, while Fahadh, appearing in a limited role, impresses with his performance.
The film’s strengths include the mesmerizing background score by Sushin Shyam, which complements the narrative and mood. However, while Neerad manages to keep the audience engaged for a significant portion of the film, the second half falters, becoming predictable and ultimately hindering the movie’s potential.
“Bougainvillea” is a captivating watch for Neerad’s signature style and the stellar performances, but its failure to maintain the initial momentum in the second half prevents it from achieving the level of brilliance seen in his earlier works like “Iyobinte Pusthakam”.
Despite the predictability, the film is a noteworthy comeback for Jyothirmayi, who is known for her roles in films like “Meeshamadhavan” and “Kalyanaraman.” The chemistry between her and Kunchacko Boban is undeniable.
Overall, “Bougainvillea” provides a captivating and intriguing experience, though it ultimately falls short of reaching its full potential due to the predictable plot developments in the second half.
