**Bengaluru, India:** Indian cricket legend and former captain, Anil Kumble, turned 54 today, October 17th. The legendary spin bowler, known for his ferocious pace and unwavering determination, is celebrated as one of the greatest bowlers India has ever produced.
Kumble, born in Bengaluru on October 17, 1970, made his international debut for India at the young age of 20 in 1990. He went on to dominate international cricket for almost 18 years, leaving an indelible mark on the game. His career boasts an impressive record of 956 wickets across all formats, making him India’s highest wicket-taker in international cricket.
He also holds the prestigious record of being the fourth highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history, having claimed 619 wickets in 132 matches.
However, Kumble’s legacy goes beyond mere statistics. He is best remembered for his remarkable feat of taking all 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999, an achievement that only three bowlers have ever accomplished in Test cricket history.
This iconic performance took place at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium (now Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium) in Delhi on February 4, 1999. Pakistan, needing 420 runs to win, were completely decimated by Kumble’s relentless spin bowling. Having already claimed four wickets in the first innings, Kumble went on to bowl Pakistan out in the second innings, taking all 10 wickets for 74 runs in 26.3 overs. Pakistan were bowled out for a paltry 207 runs, leading to a resounding 212-run victory for India.
Kumble’s exceptional career also includes 271 One Day International (ODI) matches, where he claimed 337 wickets. His contribution to Indian cricket extends beyond his on-field exploits. He went on to serve as India’s head coach from 2016 to 2017.
Today, as Kumble celebrates his 54th birthday, fans and admirers worldwide remember the legendary spinner and his unparalleled contributions to the game of cricket.
