**Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh:** Two men accused of involvement in the violent clashes during a Durga Puja procession in Bahraich on October 13th were shot in an encounter with police on Thursday. Sarfaraz and Taleem, sons of Abdul Hameed, the main accused in the case, were injured in their legs while allegedly fleeing to Nepal. They are among the accused in the killing of 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra during the procession.
The encounter took place near the Handa Basehri area, close to the Nepal border. Five people were arrested following the incident. Both Sarfaraz and Taleem are undergoing treatment at the district hospital. Police recovered the weapon used in the incident and have initiated further investigations.
Bahraich SP Vrinda Shukla confirmed the encounter and stated that the National Security Act (NSA) will be invoked against the accused. She also clarified that Mishra’s death was caused by a bullet injury, dismissing speculations surrounding the cause of death.
The incident has sparked controversy, with the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) criticizing the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the situation. The Congress accused the government of using fake encounters to cover up its failures, while the SP questioned the law and order situation in the state.
The violence in Bahraich began on Sunday when clashes erupted between two groups during a Durga idol immersion procession. The clashes, sparked by a dispute over music being played during the procession, resulted in the death of Mishra and injuries to several others.
During the ensuing protests, miscreants vandalized Lucknow Seva Hospital, destroying the X-ray machine, beds, and windows.
Following the incident, Ram Gopal Mishra’s family met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow, demanding strict action against the accused. Adityanath assured the family of justice and announced an immediate financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh. Over 50 people have been arrested in connection with the Bahraich violence.
