**Buenos Aires, Argentina** – Liam Payne, former member of the boy band One Direction, was found dead at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel room in Buenos Aires.
Police confirmed that Payne passed away on Wednesday evening at around 5 PM local time. A statement from the Buenos Aires Police said, “Liam James Payne, former member of the band One Direction, musician, and guitarist, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo.”
According to Argentinian newspapers La Nación and Clarín, authorities were initially called to the hotel responding to an emergency call reporting “an aggressive individual who may be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.”
The head of the state emergency medical system, Alberto Criscenti, told Argentinian TV channel Todo Noticias that Payne had fallen into the hotel’s inner courtyard. “Minutes later [an] emergency team arrived and confirmed the death of this man, who we later learned was from a musical group. He suffered injuries incompatible with life as a result of the fall. There was no way to do anything,” Criscenti said.
Criscenti informed Todo Noticias that authorities are investigating the circumstances of Payne’s death and conducting an autopsy.
Payne was just 16 years old when he became part of One Direction on the British reality show, The X Factor, in 2010. The band became one of the biggest pop acts in the world before disbanding in 2015.
Payne was on tour in Argentina with his bandmate Niall Horan, who performed at the Movistar Arena in the city on October 2nd. That evening, Payne was seen dancing and singing along with Horan’s fans.
