Chennai is facing a heavy rainfall situation with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting heavy to very heavy rain over the next three days. The city has gone on lockdown as a precautionary measure, with schools, colleges, and most government and private offices declared closed on October 16.
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi assured the public that the state government has taken all necessary precautions to manage the anticipated rainfall. He said, “The government has made all possible arrangements, and I am hopeful we will overcome any challenges.”
The city’s airport operations have been impacted with flights cancelled due to runway closures. Passengers have been advised to check with their airlines for updates and rebooking options.
While the situation remains under control, the heavy rainfall has led to disruptions in various parts of the city. The Chennai airport, schools and colleges, and several private companies are closed, while essential services remain operational.
The Chennai Corporation has deployed teams to clear fallen trees and address power outages. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has confirmed no power cuts have been reported in any area of Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has instructed IT companies in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts to allow their employees to work from home until October 18.
The state government has declared a holiday for the Principal Seat of Madras High Court on October 16, while Chief Minister Stalin will miss the swearing-in ceremony of Omar Abdullah as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir due to the heavy rain.
