Wed Oct 16 09:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Yankees’ Rodón Channels His Inner “Robot” to Dominate Guardians in ALCS Opener
**NEW YORK** – Carlos Rodón, after witnessing Gerrit Cole’s composed demeanor during the ALDS, decided to adopt a similar “robot” approach for his crucial Game 1 start of the AL Championship Series. And the strategy paid off in a big way.
Rodón tossed six brilliant innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out nine Guardians hitters. His dominant performance, which included a career-high 25 swing-and-misses, propelled the Yankees to a 5-2 victory and a 1-0 series lead.
“He was just in complete command of himself and of his emotions,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Rodón’s performance.
The left-hander, who struggled with his emotions in his previous playoff start, acknowledged Cole’s influence. “It’s just like a robot walking to the dugout,” he said of Cole’s calm demeanor.
Meanwhile, the Guardians’ pitching staff faltered. Starter Alex Cobb exited after just eight outs, suffering from hip and back issues. His replacement, Joey Cantillo, allowed two runs on two wild pitches and two walks before recording an out.
The Guardians’ pitching staff combined for seven walks and five wild pitches, tying an MLB postseason record.
“We just need to attack the zone better, and we didn’t tonight,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt lamented.
With Rodón setting the tone, the Yankees bullpen continued their stellar playoff form. Clay Holmes, Tim Hill, and Luke Weaver combined to record the final nine outs, with Weaver earning his second five-out save of the postseason.
The win moves the Yankees one step closer to their first World Series appearance since 2009. As for Rodón, his transformation into a “robot” on the mound has proven to be a winning formula.
