Netflix’s latest Mexican production, “El Secreto del Río,” is gaining popularity for its compelling eight-episode story about two childhood friends, Manuel and Erik, who are forced to confront a traumatic experience that threatens their freedom. The series features a diverse cast, including LGBTQ+ actors and actresses who bring authenticity to their roles.
The series follows the lives of Manuel and Erik from childhood to adulthood. Frida, a young actress known for her role in Netflix’s “El Último Vagón,” plays Manuel, a child who faces rejection in his new community due to his mannerisms. Mauro, who rose to fame on the 2021 reality show “La Voz Kids,” portrays Erik, who initially reluctantly befriends Manuel but eventually forms a deep bond with him.
As adults, Manuel transitions into his true identity as Sicarú, a transgender woman. Trinidad González, a renowned transgender model, makes her acting debut as Sicarú, showcasing her talent and adding to the series’ authentic representation of the transgender community. Erik, played by the internationally renowned actor from “Babylon,” reunites with Manuel after years of separation.
“El Secreto del Río” incorporates the cultural richness of the region by highlighting the presence of the muxe community, men who identify as women. The series features a significant number of transgender actresses, including Nova Coronel as Ámbar, Lady Kero as Marina, and La Bruja De Texcoco as Solange.
This casting choice marks a significant step towards inclusion and visibility for the transgender community in Latin American audiovisual industry. The series aims to raise awareness about the experiences of transgender people and contribute to a more inclusive and accurate representation of this community.
