**Bengaluru, India:** New Zealand’s pace bowling hopes took a hit on the eve of the first Test against India in Bengaluru, as rising star Ben Sears was ruled out due to a knee injury. Sears, who had impressed in his debut Test series against England earlier this year, experienced pain in his left knee during a training session in Sri Lanka.
Scans conducted last week in New Zealand revealed a meniscus tear, forcing him to withdraw from the series. New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment, acknowledging Sears’ ability to bowl quick and provide variety to the pace attack. “We’re obviously disappointed for Ben who made a strong start to his Test career during the home summer and offers a genuine pace option,” said Stead.
In his absence, 30-year-old Jacob Duffy has been called up as a replacement. Duffy, who is yet to make his Test debut, has a strong first-class record with 299 wickets in 102 matches. He had a notable performance in the 2023 ODI series against India, picking up the wickets of Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya despite conceding a hundred runs in Indore.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for Jacob who has been around the Test squad before. With three Tests ahead of us, he has every chance of making his Test debut,” Stead commented.
Duffy’s recent form in the English County Championship, including a five-wicket haul for Nottinghamshire last month, likely contributed to his selection. His experience and performances in white-ball cricket for the BlackCaps have impressed Stead, who is confident of Duffy’s contributions.
Sears’ injury may open the door for veteran Tim Southee, who is included in the squad and could potentially fill the vacant spot in the playing XI.
The first Test of the series begins on October 16th at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.
